I actually really like my job…
For a long time, it felt that if you're a grown-up, you need to complain about interest rates, live in a perpetual state of tiredness, and hate your job. I think about all the depictions on tv, movies, and even in my own life. The stereotypical adult walking through the door, dropping their work bag next to their discarded shoes, leafing through bills and huffing, and puffing about the state of the world.
Do we really feel this way, or are we predisposed to act this way? Are we just living up to an expectation of misery, or are we genuinely unhappy?
As a kid, it wasn't cool to like school.
As a grown-up, it's not cool to like your job.
Well, you know what?
I actually really like my job. I’m okay with being seen as uncool because I’m going somewhere each day that I actually want to go to. I have choice in where I work and I am really happy with the choice I have made.
I actually really like my job. If i didn't, I wouldn't be able to work through the tough days, and I probably would look at the successful ones with cynicism.
I actually really like my job. I am proud of how far I've come in my career and the countless number of students I have taught. I am in a privileged position to be a female, working full time in a role I love and a school where I lead. In some countries, this would be impossible.
I actually really like my job and if I didn’t really like it, I should make room for someone who does.
I actually really like my job and I'm leading by example so others can say they enjoy their jobs too. Even if someone were to say 'urgh, you’re a suck up' or 'just you wait until you've been working as long as me'. I still actually really like my job.
Lets normalise saying what we actually feel, not what we think is the expected narrative.
If you really like your job, have you actually said it? Like out loud?? You know, to other people???
I dare you tomorrow, say it to one or two people. Just to see their reaction.
You might even inspire a movement of people who feel more confident to say they actually like their job too.
